Leonor Brodett (Source: Diederik Kelder)

Leonor Brodett was baptized on 5 Aug 1801 in the Porto Salvo church in Valletta, Malta. Her parents were Daniele Brodett and Margarita Galdies both from Malta.

The Maltese Brodett family dates back to about 1640 when Giovanni Guglielmo (Jean Guillaume) Brodett moved from France to Malta. The family used the names Brodett, Brodet and Brudet interchangeably. Leonor was not the only Brodett to move from Malta to Spain, around 1798 her aunt and uncle Luis Brodett and Claudia Carbone moved from Malta to Burgos in Spain. Their four sons became notable figures in the early 1800s in Spain and overseas territories.

Juan Bautista Brodett y Carbone (1786 - 1850) was an accomplished military officer who played a pivotal role in the liberation of Castro Urdiales in 1813. In 1815 he moved to Cuba where he married Maria de los Dolores Sedano y Galán in 1855.

Casimiro Brodett (1793 - 1837) was also a military officer. He became widely known as the lover of Maria Pineda. In 1824 the couple intended to marry but Casimiro but did not get the necessary dispensation from the military authorities. Casimiro moved to Cuba in 1830, but returns to Spain in 1834 where he died on the battlefield in one of the Carlist wars in 1837.

Manuel Brodett (1788 - 1836) was Ministro Contador de las RealesCajas (Minister Accountant of the Royal Treasury) in the Philippines. In 1834 he married Don͂a María Varela de Brodett (1814-64), she became the first woman to publish a book in the Philippines. The book was published in 1840 and titled Novena de Santa María Magdalena.

Luis Brodett   (1790 - ~1850) was Alcalde mayor in Iloilo in the Philippines. In 1829 he left his post and fled to Singapore. His son Luis jnr. returned to Iloilo and became the forefather of the Brodett family in the Philippines. His second son John, born in Singapore in 1833, became the forefather the Brodett family in the Dutch East Indies.
